In 2011, Samoa literally skipped a Saturday. The island nation decided to move from the east side of the International Date Line to the west to better align its workweek with major trading partners like Australia and New Zealand. To make the switch, Samoa went straight from Thursday, December 29, to Saturday, December 31—completely erasing Friday, December 30, from its calendar. Residents went to bed on Thursday night and woke up two days later, without ever living through that Friday.
