Your stomach gets a new lining every few days to prevent it from digesting itself. The stomach produces strong hydrochloric acid to break down food, but this acid is so powerful that it could also destroy the stomach’s own tissue. To protect itself, the stomach continuously regenerates its lining, replacing old cells with new ones every 3 to 7 days. Without this constant renewal, the digestive process would quite literally eat away at the organ itself.
