🧠 The Daily Fact #29

In 1962, the U.S. accidentally dropped two nuclear bombs over Goldsboro, North Carolina, after a B-52 bomber broke apart mid-air. Each bomb was 260 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima. Miraculously, neither exploded. One of the bombs came dangerously close: its parachute deployed, and three of its four safety switches failed. The last remaining switch prevented what could have been a catastrophic disaster. To this day, parts of one bomb remain buried in a field because it was too risky to fully remove.

What was the name of the operation responsible for maintaining airborne nuclear weapons during the Cold War?
