Cyber Monday was born in 2005 as a marketing idea, not a natural phenomenon. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation after noticing a surge in online shopping the Monday after Thanksgiving. Back then, many people didn’t have reliable internet at home, so they waited until Monday to use their faster work connections to snag deals. It quickly became one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, even as home internet improved. Now, it’s a global event, with countries around the world participating.
